Our Process

Contact & Initial Discussion

After you contact us, I will ask a bit more about your design or education needs to make sure our services are a good fit.  During the phone consultation, we will be able to discuss:
  • Your goals, objectives and challenges
  • Timeline
  • Next steps

Initial 15 min consult is free

Site Assessment

For design and consultancy services, we'll schedule an onsite consultation to walk your property and gain an in-depth understanding of your vision, goals and challenges. During this visit, Susan will assess essential site conditions, including water flow, soil health, microclimates, existing vegetation, access points, wind exposure, solar aspect, and other factors critical to creating a regenerative, long term landscape then discuss a price for design work.
I will address your questions and offer expert guidance along with practical, site‑specific recommendations to help transform your landscape. Topics may include:
  • Design Priorities — beauty, habitat creation, ecological resilience, food production, relaxation, and recreation
  • Plant Selection — choosing species and varietals suited to your goals and site conditions
  • Low‑Disturbance Practices — establishing no‑till, low‑weed, and low‑water systems
  • Water Harvesting — strategies for capturing and utilizing rainwater, groundwater and greywater
  • Garden Structures — selecting appropriate locations and types of high tunnels, low tunnels, and garden beds
  • Livestock Integration — incorporating animals into backyard gardens or farms
  • Natural Pest & Disease Control — ecological approaches to managing pests and diseases
  • Soil Fertility — building and maintaining healthy, living soil
  • Low‑Maintenance Abundance — achieving high productivity with minimal ongoing labor
  • Erosion Prevention — preventing or reducing erosion through thoughtful design
  • Chemical‑Free Approaches — eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
  • Resource‑Smart Building — using reclaimed and site‑based materials to reduce costs and environmental impact

On-site visits are $115/hr within 30 miles of Edgewood (most visits last 1-1.5 hrs). Fees for visits outside this range vary by distance and property size.

All we need to live a good life lies about us. Sun, wind, people, buildings, stones, sea, birds and plants surround us. Cooperation with all these things brings harmony, opposition to them brings disaster and chaos.
